Everybody knows rising health insurance premiums siphons money right out of your paycheck. A story from last week’s Standard-Times newspaper proves this point. A Dartmouth teacher claims she’s paying $317+ a week for her Blue Cross family health insurance plan. That’s over 42 school weeks. Still her price tag is more than $1,100 a month over the entire year. Most people realize the price goes up each year.
Dartmouth teachers are battling for a contract that either gives them more money to pay for rising health insurance costs or that the town pick up a larger portion of the tab. Here’s the kicker. Dartmouth teachers pay 48% of their health insurance premium. The town foots 52%. The bottom line: Dartmouth taxpayers are paying for all town employees that opt for health insurance through the town. I forgot. That also includes all eligible retirees not on medicare.
Mike and Mary Taxpayer shell out big bucks to cover present and past government workers. In many instances Mike and Mary are giving government teachers, cafeteria workers, sanitation engineers and public officials better coverage than they can afford to give to themselves. Did I mention, there are discussions underway to possibly place a Prop 2 1/2 override measure on an upcoming Dartmouth ballot to pay for these always increasing health insurance costs?
As a former Dartmouth resident, it torques my rudder that a Prop 2 1/2 override is under consideration to pay for increasing benefits for town employees. Benefits I do not myself enjoy the pleasure of reaping. If Dartmouth teachers would consider other medical options, like a higher deductible plan, they could put more money in their bank account. No, they’re crying victim. Mike and Mary Taxpayer are the real victims!
Town government needs to seriously re-position their thought process outside the proverbial box and choose a better medical benefits solutions to cover all its employees. Staying the course – No to a Prop 2 1/2 override = another broke municipality!
